OPTICAL TESTING SERVICE

V.C.S.M. offers an economical service for amateur astronomers, wishing to ascertain the working quality of an optical system or component. This will be specified as a suitability guide for the intended purpose of use and a statement of actual optical quality in comparison to a 'perfect ' system.

Test method for Newtonian Optical Flats

Optical flats will be tested against a reference flat. This will determine their accuracy in wavelengths of light by the interference fringes shown. Flats will also be tested by auto-collimation against a spherical mirror to determine image quality and detect astigmatism. Flats mounted on holders can often be distorted by poor glueing methods. This test will prove the quality of the mounting system, before the flat needs to be dismounted and tested separately.
Test method for Primary Mirrors, including Cassegrain systems and Object Glasses

Optics are tested by auto-collimation against a perforated 20 inch diameter optical reference flat. Newtonian mirrors are placed such that light from the test source radiates from behind the flat, through the central perforation and on to the mirror being tested. This in turn reflects the light in a parallel beam onto the test flat, which returns it for re-focusing by the mirror being tested, back to the tester behind the flat. Double reflection by the mirror being tested greatly enhances any deviations from true. With Cassegrain systems and object glasses, the light source is placed at the focus of the system again, but with the optics and the tester facing the test flat .Again light passes twice through the optics being tested with subsequent enhancement of any optical faults.

GRINDING POWDERS

Silicon Carbide (C)
Rough grinding powders for grinding mirrors to the required curve starting with flat (non diamond generated) mirror blank and grinding tool.

Three grades of coarse grinding powders are listed below. The table advises the probable amount of each grade of powder needed to grind the mirror sizes listed below. The powders are priced at a cost per pound ( nominal 1/2 kilo ) in weight. Any amount greater or smaller than this may be purchased.

FRONT SURFACE MIRRORS


Used for photography, audio-visual projection and reflex binocular mounts, because the reflection comes from the front face there are no 'ghost' double images as would be caused by normal 'looking glass' mirror.

Standard sizes from 1/4" (6mm) thick glass. All prices include p & p.

For larger mirrors close to, but not exceeding 1 x 1.2 metres the cost is normally £265 per square metre. Mirrors with either dimension above 1 x 1.2 metres up to the maximum size of 1.8 x 2.5 metres the cost is £295 per square metre. N.B. All prices are plus V.A.T. Delivery charges upon application.

Remember - we also provide a re-coating service for sextant mirrors camera mirrors and prisms. We can only coat these once they are removed from your camera. Please contact a camera specialist if uncertain. Prism re-coats are £15- £25 depending on type,incl. p&p. Mirror re-coats/re-makes are £10- £15, depending on size, inc. p + p

PROMPT / AUTOCUE / PEPPERS GHOST GLASSES
Titanium is a high quality, permanent, semi-reflective layer. The standard beam splitter (50:50) is used at an angle of about 45°.At exactly 45° the reflection is a few percent less than the transmission. An angle of about 50° is needed for a precise 50:50 split. It allows images from two directions to be combined into one. Used in another configuration it allows images to be projected and re-photographed, filmed, videoed etc. A second standard coating ratio (30:70) is available; this reflects one third (see diagram image 2) and passes two thirds of the direct image (see diagram image 1). This is the normal standard for prompt and autocue glasses.Because it is baked on to the glass at a temperature of 400 degrees C it cannot wear away and may be cleaned and treated as a normal glass surface.


Normal range of thickness
The titanium coat is normally used on 2mm (or less) glass thickness for beam splitters below 6" square. Larger than about 6"-8" (150-200mm) upwards, 3mm glass is the standard used on most autocue and prompt glasses.

Normal size range
This is from one eigth inch square (3 x 3mm) up to 28 1/2" x 36" (725 x 915mm) rectangles, this largest size is normally 4mm or 6mm glass.
